Long Field takes wind out of Hammers game

Bellingham United 0 Yakima United 4.

Today was a tough match for Bellingham United. Bellingham was having a hard time adjusting to the conditions of the field which was very long. It was a game where the Hammers possession style of play was tough and you had to play very direct and they were not good enough today with that style of play.

Defensively the Hammers were solid in the first half and Riley Liddle made a couple good saves. The second half Yakima pushed a lot more numbers forward and were driving balls deep into Bellingham’s end and they had difficulty managing the ball allowing Yakima to capitalize on their mistakes. Unfortunately Bellingham gave up another inadvertent PK, for the 3rd goal, on a handball which took the wind out of their sails.

Offensively not enough good opportunities were created in the first half that were dangerous. In the second half Bellingham had a couple great opportunities, hitting the post on a couple of occasions but not good enough to get the ball across the line. Hats off to Yakima who played a good game and managed the conditions better than the Hammers did while capitalizing on their chances. For Yakima, Jesse Esquivel was very opportunistic throughout the game and his hard work paid off with a hat trick.

Bellingham United had a few players that were missing from the regular lineup due to the holiday, next week United’s coach Lance Calloway is confident they will be stronger and look to net a better result for Bellingham United.
