Bellingham United FC hosted the Spokane Shadow on Sunday, July 19 at Civic Stadium. It was a defensive battle that the Shadow ended up on the winning side as they clinched the Evergreen Premier League of Washington title with the 2-0 win.
“It was a tough match, Spokane is a very good side,” United’s head coach, Lance Calloway said. “Congratulations to them for winning the championship.”
Spokane scored the opening goal of the match in the 24’ after a United player was called for a penalty in the box, resulting in a penalty kick that was converted by Zach Hamer.
United’s defense held strong as they were able to keep play ahead of them for the majority of the half. However, they were unable to capitalize offensively and went into the locker room down 1-0.
On the other end of the pitch, United was able to create multiple scoring chances, but were unable to take advantage. Shadows keeper, Tony Walters had a few great saves to deny every United shot on goal.
In the 58’ Spokane double their lead as Adam Talley was able to get behind United’s defense and fired a shot past keeper Rylie Liddle. Walters again made a pair of beautiful diving saves to solidify the 2-0 Shadow victory.
United will hit the pitch for one last game next Sunday, July 26 at Civic Stadium. Bellingham will host the Seattle Stars FC in the season finale kicking off at 3 p.m.
