With a record crowd of over 755 people in attendance, Bellingham United Hammers won the Western Indoor Soccer League Championship, and they did it in style. Jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first with goals by Nick Cashmere, Kurtis Pederson and Richard Henderson it was clear that BUFC was hungry for goals early and often- something that in previous games hasn’t always been the case. “We came out strong from the very beginning, the boys were ready to play. We understood how important it was to score first and calm the nerves so our start was huge for us,” player/coach Brendan Quilici said. Olympic scored with a little over a minute left in the quarter to make the first quarter score 4-1 in favor of the Hammers. As the first half went on, both teams had chances, however neither was able to score until the final eight seconds, tallying his second goal of the game. Jimenez, who has been a huge part of the squad all year, finally reaped the rewards of all of his hard work with two first half goals. United went into halftime with a 5-1 advantage, only two quarters away from something they had been in search of all season. Olympic Force would not go away quietly, however, outscoring Hammers 2-1 in the third quarter making the score 6-3 heading into the final quarter. A physical match the entire time, the fourth quarter was end to end action with both teams still pressing to score- highlighted by a goal by Quilici with the assist to Jimenez. Jimenez stole the ball away from a Force attacker, dribbled in between two defenders and then was off to the races, making his way down the field before finding Quilici who was patiently waiting to top shelf the ball into the upper right corner. As time expired, the score showed 8-5 with Hammers claiming their first WISL Title and finishing the season with an 11-1 record, and remaining undefeated at home. A huge thank you to all of the family and friends who came and supported the boys all season!
