Bellingham United FC took to the pitch on the road Saturday, July 11 to take on the EPLWA leading South Sound FC in Lakewood, Wash. Midfielder, Kyle Witzel notched two goals for United, both in extra time of each half to force a 2-2 draw.
“I am extremely proud of the entire squad’s effort today,” United’s head coach, Lance Calloway said. “We created several opportunities in attack, as well as, bending but not breaking defensively.”
It was a defensive battle from the beginning of the match, as the opening goal wasn’t surrendered until late in the first half. In the 43’ it was South Sound that got on the board first as they played a brilliant cross into the box which was headed into the goal. United answered in the 45’ when Witzel dribbled the ball from the right of the box and hit the left footed shot into the lower left corner of the goal, sending the squads into the locker room with the match knotted at one.
Both teams created multiple opportunities throughout the second half, but came up empty. In the 80’ Lenny Kusina was issued his second yellow card and was sent off the field, forcing United to play a man down. South Sound capitalized in the 82’on a scramble in front of the United goal resulting in the ball being kicked in net to give South Sound a 2-1 lead.
United didn’t let up the pressure even down a man. In the 90’ Kurtis Pederson drew a foul near midfield resulting in a free kick. Carlos Badillo played in a beautiful left footed ball that Witzel settled with his chest and then struck past the South Sound keeper into the right side of the net to tie the match before the final whistle.
“This squad has not had the best results this season, but they have played good soccer for the greater part of our matches,” Calloway said. “I believe we will be able to build on this in our upcoming matches and finish the season strong.”
BUFC will get back to the pitch this weekend with two home matches on Saturday July 18th and 19th both at 3pm at Civic Stadium. Be sure to keep up with the United Facebook page for live game updates.
